2023 MUFLL Championships are November 3-5th, 2023 at Dalhousie University

Oct. 30, 2023

Dalhousie University is hosting the 2023 MUFLL championship weekend, November 3rd to 5th, 2023.

Championship action kicks off on Friday night at 6pm at Wickwire Field, with the Mount Allison Mounties making the trip down to Halifax hoping for an upset of the SMU Huskies. The Huskies come into the playoffs after back to back heartbreaking overtime losses to the STFX X-Men on Friday and Sunday this past weekend. The Mounties arrive to the playoffs in a familiar position as the lowest seed, but remain hopeful of picking up a playoff win for the first time since 2018. They wrapped up the regular season on Saturday October 28th with a home loss to the host Dal Tigers.

The second quarter-final slated for 8pm Friday night sees a battle between 2 teams who are travelling a long way with high hopes for a strong showing, with the 4th-seeded UNB Reds, "hosting" the 5th-seeded UPEI Panthers. The Panthers have had a week off to practice, having wrapped up their regular season schedule on October 22nd with a lopsided loss to the Dal Tigers, while the Reds are hoping to continue their winning ways after back-to-back wins over the STFX X-Men and Mount Allison Mounties to close the regular season.

Waiting for the winner of the first quarter-final are the STFX X-Men, who are looking to avenge their close loss in last year's championship game to the Dal Tigers. Despite maintaining their usual position in the standing, this year's X squad posted a negative goal differential for the first time since records exist. While this anomaly might be skewed by having only played 8 games, and with their 9th recorded result being a forfeited home game where they were set to face the Mounties, the X-Men are a team to watch this year, both because of their upset potential in a potential championship matchup with the tigers, but also the possibility of the Huskies avenging their back-to-back overtime losses if they manage to get past the Mounties in the quarter-finals.

The Dalhousie Tigers, this year's number 1 seed, will look to defend their throne and shoot for a 12th-consecutive championship on home turf starting with a semi-final match-up against the winner of the Panthers' showdown with the Reds on Friday night. After handling both teams with ease during the regular season, does anyone have the chops to knock off the dynasty? Only time will tell if this is the year that the rest of the league can take out the Tigers.

All-Stars and Major award winners will be presented on the field this year, so come on out to witness some exciting MUFLL action!

*Please note that UNB's home games vs. SMU and DAL were both counted as 4 points in the standings because of the cancellation of UNB's trip to Halifax due to weather earlier in the year, thus resulting in the seeding observed in the quarter-final matchups.
