Dalhousie's Quest for #7

2017-10-12

Last Years MUFLL Champs, the Familiar Tigers

The Tigers Roster this year looks younger than years past, but the expectations are the same as any other year.

The now Consecutive Six-Time MUFLL Champion Dalhousie Tigers have come into the 2017 season with a large rookie class that needs to fill some big holes left by graduating seniors, the Tigers don’t seem to be too worried about attaining this years goal.
Coached by a bevy of MUFLL and CUFLA alumni, the Tigers are a product of the system that their players function in and have the right pieces in place to manage the talent on the roster so they can get the most out of every player down the line.
Its Championship or bust for Dalhousie and they wouldn’t want it any other way. 4th-year close defender Neil McCallum knows that this squad has to keep their sights on what in front of them, and not let their glare wander to later in the year.
“ Losing our top 4 scorers from last season is a huge loss. They were great players for us for a long time. However, that does not change our expectation from last year whatsoever. It only offers more opportunities for other players to step up and carry the torch as we chase another championship this year.”
The likes of Paddy Quinn, Drew MacDonald, and Thomas Crane, a deadly attackmen unit for the Tigers, who always seemed to find a way to score won’t be lining up this season, much to the delight of every goalie that isn’t donning the Black and Yellow this year. Then there is Louis Martin, the burly face-off specialist who had such a great feel of the game and always seemed to make the right play when he was on the field. These are important roles to fill, replacing an entire attack unit and arguably the best-face-off specialist that MUFLL has seen is no easy task for any team, This Dalhousie team though isn’t just any team.
The Tigers have fourteen, yes 14, new recruits this season. Many of whom have found success at the highest level while playing in the Minors in Nova Scotia and across Canada.
Incoming Players:
  • Matt Brenzel
  • Cody Bomersine
  • Dalton Brown
  • Lucas Doucette
  • Kirk Drabble
  • Brett Draper
  • Olli Harris
  • Anton Jasa
  • Jack Lawrence
  • Liam Macintosh
  • Ryan Marinelli
  • Saunders White
  • Matt Wilson
  • Michael Workentin
There are a few familiar names on this list of incoming freshman, which is welcomed sign. It’s always great to see players from Nova Scotia stay close by to continue their lacrosse careers while getting a first-class education.
Along with these new recruits, the Tigers have a couple transfers that will be sure to make an impact on the roster. Lucas Kenny, Matt McKay, and Oliver Phillips are all newcomers to the Dalhousie Lacrosse program.

Key Upperclassmen:
  • Brett McGuire – Midfield
  • Jesse Chong – Midfield/Attack
  • Jeremy Baumiester – Goalie
  • Devon Collard – Goalie
  • Sam Domachevski – Midfield

If you want to know how deep this year’s roster is for the Tigers, then look no further than their two-headed monster in the pipes. Both Jeremy Baumiester and Devon Collard have supplanted themselves as candidates for Goaltender of the year. In the Midfield you couldn’t ask for a more savvy and experienced tandem in Brett McGuire and Sam Domachevski. Domachevski has taken over as Dalhousie’s lead Face-off man with Brett quarterbacking the offense from up top. Along with can’t-do-no wrong Jesse Chong. This year's midfield for the Tigers has shown they are an elite group.

This season looks to be heading down a similar path for this year's Tigers squad. Led by a veteran coaching staff consisting of Head Coach Connor Dubreuil, Defensive Assistant Coaches Ross Wills, Brett McNeil and Matt Dunbar and offensive assistant Jaime Dunbar. These coaches need to ensure this team doesn’t look too far down the schedule for the next month leading up to Championship Weekend. But right now at this point of the season, it seems far-fetched to see the Tigers letting anyone get in the way of reaching their goal.
